New York City Citywide Free WiFi

LinkNYC kiosks provide public Wi-Fi to New Yorkers, small businesses, and visitors in all five boroughs. Each Link provides free Wi-Fi, phone calls, and device charging. You can also use a tablet to access city services, maps, and directions.

The Wi-Fi kiosks in New York were designed to replace phone booths and allow users to consult maps, check the weather or charge their phones. But they have also attracted people who linger for hours, sometimes drinking and doing drugs and, at times, boldly watching pornography on the sidewalks. This is why browsing capabilities was removed from LinkNYC tablets.

Another project is the Solar-powered trash bins in New York City that will provide more than just waste disposal. Bigbelly, a waste management company with trash and recycling cans located across the city, wants to turn its garbage centers into free WiFi hotspots that can support the bandwidth equivalent of an entire small business.

A pilot project in downtown Manhattan has been ongoing since last winter, when the company rigged two of its 170 neighborhood trash cans with WiFi hot spots. Tests of the signal quality and number of people who could connect to the network showed that the dank location of the WiFi units wouldn’t be a problem. Each unit had a bandwidth of 50 to 75 megabits per second.

New York City has a history of ambitious plans to turn everyday city sights into hotspots. Another good reason why NYC is the greatest city in the world.
