New York Judge OKs No Prescription for 'Morning-After Pill' for Girls of all Ages

A federal judge in New York has ordered the Food and Drug Administration to make the "morning-after" pill available -- without prescription -- to girls of all ages.

The controversial emergency contraception pill, popularly known as "Plan B," typically works up to 72 hours after intercourse.

When it was introduced into the U.S. market in 2011, Kathleen Sebelius, secretary for Health and Human Services, overruled an FDA recommendation and banned its sale over the counter to girls under 17.

Reuters and The New York Times reported that the ruling by U.S. District Judge Edward Korman came in a lawsuit filed by reproductive-rights organizations.

The pill has been widely available for several years in Europe and Latin America.
